Caring for antique and estate pieces

Older jewellery deserves gentle handling. When in doubt, pause and ask a specialist before cleaning or repairing a piece.

Put jewellery on after perfume and cosmetics. Remove it before bathing, exercising, gardening or using household chemicals.

Keep each jewel in a soft pouch or lined compartment so harder gemstones and metal edges cannot scratch neighbouring pieces.

Use a clean, soft cloth after wear. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and chemical dips, particularly for pearls, coral, emeralds and antique settings.

Check clasps, prongs and links before wearing. If a stone feels loose or a fitting has changed, stop wearing the piece until it is assessed.

Repairs and restoration should respect the jewel's age and construction. Seek a jeweller experienced with antique and period pieces.
